Churches have always been a source of inspiration and sanctuary for people in need, so it is not hard to understand why so many people approach a church for help when a problem occurs. The challenges arise for the churches, who may or may not know the individual and most probably will not be connected to all of the available resource in the community that could offer solutions to each need.
In 1977, a group of churches in western Michigan recognized this phenomenon. This group, let by Virgil Gulker created a "clearinghouse" to which people coming to the churches could be referred. This clearinghouse model of churches working together and sharing volunteers and financial resources was incorporated into the first Love INC in 1977. This model attempts to avoid duplication of effort between churches, provide screening of needs, and offer referrals to area services to meet the need. Using this model, Love INC of the Western Suburbs - or LOVE Christian Clearinghouse as we are known locally, was incorporated in 1985.
In addition to providing for the material needs of our callers, LOVE tries to connect neighbors in need with the non-material resources available within all local churches: people. Through programs and services that connect people who want to serve with people in need, we focus on the whole person, their relationship needs, their spiritual wellness needs and their emotional needs.
Love INC's mission is to mobilize the local church to transform lives and communities in the name of Christ. LOVE is a partnership of many local Christian churches, working together to unify the church around our neighbors in need.
